3 Steps To Overcome the Lack of Motivation
“Many people think they lack motivation when what they really lack is clarity. It is not always obvious when and where to take action. Some people spend their entire lives waiting for the time to be right to make an improvement.” - James Clear
I’m the first one to raise my hand at this. Far too often, I feel unmotivated, but the reality is that I need clarity on what I’m going to be doing. Awareness is key. When I know that my motivation is frequently due to the lack of clarity, I can take action to make the task clear. Here are three steps that I will often take to gain clarity and fight the perceived unmotivation.
- Put my phone on the other side of the room, sleep my computer, and grab my favorite fountain pen, paper, and set a timer for 10-15 minutes.
- Brain dump everything on my mind about the particular task or project.
- Write three successive steps that I can take on the project.
This clarifies what I need to do without the pressure of starting the project. I will often not begin working on the task at that moment but add the first step on my analog card for the next day so I’m ready to start. The passage of time helps me gain additional clarity on what I want to do.
